I never really got into Star Trek despite quite a number of attempts, whereas I really got into Star Wars, so for me it has to be Star Wars.

I'm yet to see the Phantom Menace (Episode I) but I'm told that it is the weakest entry in the series. I think Episodes 4-6 are great, and 2 and 3 aren't bad, though I didn't quite enjoy either of them as much as the original trilogy. I also like John Williams's orchestral scores and have the CD soundtracks from each of the 6 films.

^^^^^^ Seems uncalled for.

Might we all agree, however, that of the Star Treks, the "prequel" series set on Earth ("Enterprise"?) and the most recent film, with Spock getting the girl, were both dire?

I think the last series of Star Trek tends to be overlooked by a lot of people, but is very enjoyable once you get into it.
But it's the Borg that do it for me, the greatest villains ever conceived in my opinion. The Best of Both Worlds I & II from TNG and Scorpion I & II from Voyager, 2 fantastic double episodes!
OH yes those 2 double episodes with the borg were more movie big budget stuff excellent.
Could one of the mods start a poll,I forgot about that.

Difficult question.

Pure Startrek vs Starwars then Startrek wins it. Primarily because the original series was 6/10, Next Generation was 6/10 but DS9 from series 3 was 9/10 and Voyager was a consistant 8.5/10 with Enterprise being 6/10 (gows on me the more i watch it). Starwars averages 8/10.

In movies, then Starwars wins it. Episode 3 is my third greatest movie of all time and sadly Statrek produced some appaling movies. Here they all are in list form..

Episode 3
Startrek 2
Startrek 6
Startrek 4
Episode 6
Episode 4
Episode 5
Startrek 8
Startrek 11 (2009)
Episode 2
Startrek 3
Episode 1
Startrek 7
Startrek 10
Startrek 9
Startrek 5
Startrek 1

While it looks bad, Startrek: The Motion Picture is the only one that i never want to watch again, i like the rest to some degree.

Remember, May 2012 is Startrek 12 with Khan again.

At first when I saw Star trek the motion picture which was made back in 1979 I didn`t care too much for it at the time,Star trek 2 was then great(as there was only 2 out then)but I`ve come to see the first is actually now very well done indeed for the time it came out.
It`s similar to star trek 5 as it`s for trekkies.

Star Trek was probably at its best when they brought out a good film (some are just bad). DS9 was excellent later on in the series and still lives up to the test of time, it seemed a lot less naive than the other series which don't really fit with the general mood of tv at the moment (in my opinion, then again, i adore all this dark Nordic crime stuff that's popular at the moment). Star Wars was a lot more consistent and other than the rather cringe inducing child actor in the Phantom Menace, was generally very enjoyable through (as long as Mr Lucas doesn't keep tampering with them =p).
Could you ever envision a situation where the lack of honeycomb centered chocolate bars could be the direct cause of a lethal radiation leak?

I was not actually interested in Sci-Fi until DS9 was coming to an end however having watched every episode i actually found the first two seasons to be fairly boring however season 3 onward was fantastic and then having multiple wars (Klingon vs Cardasian and allies vs Dominion) just made it even better, the final 4 series were true Startrek standouts.

Not a Sci/fi fan I take it.
There are a lot who don`t get Sci/Fi(the older generation in particular)
But I know alot who love star wars and don`t like Star trek.
And alot who like the revamp Dr who series, and not the older classics with Tom Baker etc.

*sob* nearly 34 years old, and classed as an older generation... Wasn't 1977 approx the year Star Wars was launched? Posted Image

I don't think it's about age: my mother is 77 - she adores Star Trek.

Its weird this thread was posted and a day or two later, William Shatner had a pop at Star Wars. Was this the reason why this thread was posted in the first place or just a coincidence?

The reason why Star Trek endured is because the original characters had depth. It wasn't an action series set in space with cardboard characters.

The updated special effects of the original series of Star Trek are really good.

Can anyone remember Lost in Space TV series?
