Yup, BBC saying winds are fairly calm in Scotland, but will pick up later in the day (particularly afternoon/evening), same for Northern Ireland and the north of England.

Already an 82mph gust at Capel Curig.

Looking at the map, with a southwesterly wind at Capel Curig, the wind will be descending down over Snowdon and getting funnelled along the Nantygwryd valley before reaching the weather station, so it really is in a prime spot for high gusts in these conditions.

Katia is here? Nothing happening here.

Barely any wind at all right now. I thought there was a big gust, but it was just a bus.

We haven't really got into the main event today just yet!

A good overview from UKASF for today:

Synopsis:

The remains of Hurricane Katia have combined with a mid-latitude cyclone and will finally make landfall into western Scotland during the middle part of the day. A large area of low pressure with a central pressure of around 969mb will cross Scotland during the afternoon. Through the early morning hours a cold front will push a swathe of rain across most parts of Britain followed by blustery winds, with gales possible in Northern England and SW Scotland in particular.

Discussion:

During Sunday Katia failed to develop any notable cold front, indicating some very warm, moist air in the central circulation of the system. During the early morning hours, however, as the system continues to rotate, cooler air will begin to wrap around the western and later southern flank of the system, and the cold front will become more of a feature bringing some rain to many parts of Britain. Very blustery winds will filter across all parts of Britain after the cold front passes, however gale force winds with damaging gusts are possible across SW Scotland and the northern Pennines of Northern England. As typical with mid-latitude cyclones the wind field will extend away from the centre, thus where the actual centre crosses will be light to moderate with the strongest winds driven south of the low centre on the forward edge of a 150kt + jet streak.

Convective potential will be severely limited by cloud cover and strong wind shear thus thunder is very unlikely (even closer to the low centre where there could be some remnant warm air). However, with any shallow convective elements wind shear could produce a few small, very fast moving, tornadoes, although they would be very hard to verify given the strenght of the mean synoptic flow.

Morning all!

Well I was very surprised this morning in that Newbury has had some gusts of winds. I wouldnt say much just a few gusts. I iniitally thought that there was absolotuly nothing and it was calm. It is though I suspect a very light breeze compared to some. It isnt sustianed by any means.

Laky Vyrnwy (sp?) is normally the high point for wind in that area. Yes, wind travels over the Moel's into the Nantgwynant valley before being compressed by a swift climb to the south of the Llanberis pass and accelerated to Capel Curig (assume the weather station is at Plas y Brenin?) Wouldn't want to attempt Crib Goch, today!

No on a S westerly the wind follows the contours of the Ceiriog and the Dee valleys, giving North Shropshire a good blow before heading toward Ellesmere...

Capel Curig is a good 70 miles West.

Odd, it's strangely calm out this morning, with the highest gust so far only 25mph and that was at 6am.

Are my eyes deceiving me, or is the eye of the storm still to the North West of Ireland?

According to Welsh news, trees are down and normal restrictions that come with winter storms on the Bridges in Wales, but also they report a roof blown off a house in Trelewis or Treharris, so Katia has got a sting in her tail, for those complaining its calm where they are it is probably the calm before the storm. Sorry could not resist it.

Probably, that's why the strongest winds are reserved for later.

At 6.30 before I left for work my faulty wind gauge was showing gusts of 35 mph, and it's recording approx. 20-30 mph low. Latest output has the worst winds further south than previously progged, so maybe we will see some 'proper wind' up on the Hill, for the first time in quite a while.

It's definitely well behind schedule then. GFS has it just over Scotland at 9am!

It's a good 100 something miles behind.
