This might not be a 'classical music' as such, but as a brass band fanatic, I attended the yearly British Open Brass Band Championship last weekend at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham. This is a contest where the best bands of Britain compete against each other and has to play a test piece. This year's test piece was 'Red Priest' by Philip Wilby and the winners were the Cory Band from Wales. 'Red Priest' is the composer's portrait of Antonio Vivaldi, the piece includes notable elements of the ‘Four Seasons’ and the fugue from ‘L’Estro Armonico’ to the more oblique, subtle ciphers of ‘Nisi Dominus’ and ‘Gloria’. This is the winning performance, please enjoy!

I find it impossible to name an absolute favourite - there are so many different ones which which tingle my spine for various reasons but in the main I love deep and meaningful music - there is Shostakovich's 5th which so deeply captures the Stalinist regime. Keeping with Russia there is Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture which never fails to stir, then the marvellous repertoire of the Red Army Ensemble - the Russians have really suffered and this comes out strongly in their music. Russian Choral music with their deep basses - great.

Heading west, we then come to Tannhauser, what a wonderful piece of music this is - a bit to the north we have Chopin, his Marche Funebre (Orchestrial version) is another favourite, though I still recall the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill and this was played by the bands in his funeral procession. Whilst we are in a contemplative mood I like pretty well all the requiems.

Not forgetting Beethhoven and his 9th is my favourite - Then Fortuna from Carmina Barunna, Holst's Planet Mars, Rachmaninoff's Concerto No 2, Warsaw Concerto. Berlioz, March to the Scaffold (his tale of unrequited love)

Coming to the UK, Benjiman Britten, War Requiem and Peter Grimes, Purcell, Elgar, Enigma Variations and Pomp and Circumstance, with the old Last Night of the Prom favourites, like the Horn Pipe, the sea shanty medley and Jerusalem.

Alright - I am greedy - forget being limited to 8 records on Desert Island Discs - I want them all together with a few Jazz pieces, especially the blues.

Oh I forgot my most favourite composer - J S Bach - Air on a G string is wonderful as is his Toccata and Fugue.

Difficult to choose any specific piece, but my three favourite composers are Debussy, Gershwin (his orchestral works rather than his songs) and Grieg. One example of each will suffice:

Debussy's "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune"

My favourite bit is around 2:33. Oddly, this piece is meant to represent a fawn on a hot day, yet I associate it with snowy scenes (in particular the phase starting 2:33 puts me in mind of heavy blowing snow overnight).

My favourite Gershwin piece is probably the 2nd movement of his Concerto in F:

and Grieg's Piano Concerto is an old favourite:

I should also mention that I'm a fan of William-Lloyd Webber (quite an obscure one, but his "Aurora" and "Three Spring Miniatures" stick out for me) and also of much of John Williams's scores for Star Wars.

Good taste in music.. Spem in Alium is a forty part motet which keeps building and building..A great piece of music.
Nice choice and off the beaten track to the usual stuff people like.

Blimey as a pro musician I could fill this page up with stuff, so I'll limit it to a few of my favourites.

What I find interesting is why people find certain pieces of music attractive. Sometimes it's an event in ones past. In my case I think it's the strong major minor changes that attract me.

Anyway I'll post a few up because if I don't now I'll ramble all day about music..

Not in any order of preference.

One of my favourite composers.. He captures the English countyside so well in his writing.

Ralph Vaughan Williams

Sung as it was intended by a counter tenor, or castrati as they were known as then.. ( Yep it's a man singing )

And this Georgian folk song called Zinskaro used in the Werner Herzog film Nosferatu.. So haunting. The strange thing about this is that the scales seem to have no real tonal center and wander around all over the place. Music starts at 0:38.
