Has Stockholm in Sweden had any snow this winter? I'm shocked to see it still snow-free in late January, surely a record.. anyway the forecast for Stockholm is cold with sub-zero temperatures day and night so just need the snow to fall.

Fascinating picture, illustrates perfectly the effects of the Gulf stream on NW Europe...just look what everyone else has at the same latitude!

My thoughts exactly - if ever there was a satellite image which proves the gulf stream effect in Europe then this is it!

Does anyone know on what date of the year on average does northern hemispheric ice cover reach its maximum levels? - I suspect it is sometime in February before it goes into retreat? - same with snowcover I imagine as well.

It reaches its peak in early March I'm sure. Snow cover is different, as sea ice will generally continue well after the snow has melted.

Well, it's been one of the most depressing winters for northern and western Europe that we've ever had.

Much of Sweden is currently experiencing snow due to a trough to the south, bringing in easterly winds for the next few days before blocking takes control. Stockholm should see some snow both from the trough and later SES.
Hoping for a future in meteorology!

Hello Cyclonic - where have you been?!

I really enjoyed (and, hopefully continue to enjoy?!) your posts - you really keep this thread going. How are things looking now?

De-Lurking to second that. I generally only post in the Regional, but for a good year and a half before registering, I was following the Snow And Ice coverage in your threads, so please do continue if you have time, as it's much appreciated!

For those of us who have relied on Cyclonic Happiness having the spare time.... where do we find the graphics he posted, or something that's as similarly easy to understand, please?

It would be interesting to see how this very cold spell has effected the ice conditions in the Baltic and in the Arctic north east of Scandinavia. Come on Cyclonic, post a full set of maps please.
