ARCTIC BLAST BRINGS BACK SNOW

BRITAIN is braced for winter to roar back next week bringing freezing gales from the Arctic. Temperatures are set to plunge from today with parts of the country experiencing lows of -11C (12F). A bitter blast will bring widespread snow from midweek with blizzards sweeping in from the North Pole. Early predictions are that the latest deluge will hit the North hardest – but there could also be snow in parts of the South. Forecasters say drifts a foot deep in remote areas will cause problems on the roads as Britain endures a repeat of the recent big freeze. The Met Office said yesterday parts of the UK could wake up to the first snowfall as early as this morning.

Forecaster Dan Williams said: “There is snow expected in Scotland and there may well be some down the east coast. Saturday is going to feel colder with temperatures close to freezing with northerly winds. Next week there will be some wintry showers from the Midlands northwards.†Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said the most severe blast would arrive on Tuesday. “From Saturday we are back to severe frosts and it is going to be very, very cold across the UK,†he said. “We are looking at another blast from the Arctic on Monday with some snow before the full brunt of it on Tuesday. Worst hit is going to be the North although the whole country is likely to get another deluge of snow with lows of -11C possible, this is the picture for the rest of the week.†Forecasters said last month’s big freeze was the worst winter snap for two years. This week’s milder weather has seen melting snow and heavy rain lead to floods across the country. Many homes have been under water and roads have turned into rivers with parts of the South-west worst hit.

WE'RE BACK IN THE FREEZER AS ARCTIC BLASTS SWEEP UK

BRITAIN will shiver today as Polar winds and freezing temperatures bring back snow chaos. A biting wind-chill factor will send the mercury plummeting to a –8C in some areas, with up to two inches of snow falling in the east. Snow is also expected to arrive in the north and west of the country, raising fears of a return to last month’s Arctic conditions. Roads and railways could come to a grinding halt again, while residents also face soaring fuel bills as they ramp up the thermostat to cope with the latest freeze.

In Wales the temperature is predicted to plunge to as low as –4C, while in the east, 30mph northerly winds will make it feel bitterly cold. The Arctic blast is a huge turnaround compared to the mild 14C just a few days ago. Met Office forecasters said it would heat up to a cloudy 8C tomorrow before another wet and windy week. The north will be hit by severe gales and wintry showers by Tuesday, followed by sleet in the south and isolated snow showers in the west. The River Thames flooded land in south-west London after heavy downpours yesterday, while homes along the River Severn in the west are at risk of flooding over the weekend.

Yes that looks very good , the thing is anything can happen over the coming days/weeks , and a trough dropping down the eastern flank of the high looks very possible , the vortex is modelled to loosen its grip on the Canadian sector over the next 10 days so that opens an opportunity for the Siberian sector to play a part , and if it can drop into Russia then our friendly high can begin its retrogression toward Greenland .

I think as ever this cold spell is very much a developing situation and I'm sure things will change over the Congo days, just good to see the easterly move into the more reliable time frames.

On a separate note I would like to apologise for my part to Jason for my attitude .

Thought I would post this link to Congo Weather so that we can tell when the weather changes in that region. GFS still deciding not to follow the ECM, but because the ECM isn't going for anything as extreme as it was in December I'm strangely beginning to see that this time it could be picking up on the correct weather pattern for the next few weeks.

Ian Fergusson has wrote this in the SW thread this evening

Looks like the Met office remain unconvinced with ECM at the moment although uncertainty remains a break down to a westerly flow is possible now its just how quickly it may happen

Well as a counter to this this from Will Hand this morning (UKSW)

"Behind the scenes the MetO are very concerned about another snowy spell this

month. Due to uncertainties nothing much has been said yet for fear of

"damaging the brand" and setting the Press off on one. But looking at the

charts this morning it would seem something more definite will be announced

in the next day or two I expect. Going to be an interesting month I fancy

with borderline snow events to contend with :-)"

You are probably better off asking in either the north east or North west regional board.

Weather: Ice Warning After Snow And Sleet

More than four inches of snow settles in some places as the Met Office warns icy conditions could cause travel disruption later.

Ice warnings are in place for much of the country after more than four inches (10cm) of snow settled in some places. Sleet and snow began falling in central, eastern and southern areas overnight with most areas from Scotland down through to southeast England hit with a covering of at least two inches (5cm). And the worst affected areas, including north England and the Midlands, could have twice that.

More than four inches has already settled in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. The snow is expected to stop later this morning, but the accumulations could still cause travel disruption. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings affecting much of England, Scotland and Wales, because of the danger of ice following the snow. More light flurries are predicted for today and tomorrow, after which the week is expected to turn milder.

Sky News meteorologist Chris England said: "Eastern Wales and central and eastern parts of Scotland and England will see widespread snow overnight. The snow will clear from Scotland and northern England later. "Elsewhere, western Wales, southwest England and Ireland will mostly have rain, but there will be some snow too, mainly over the hills. It will turn mostly dry there by morning. "Today will be rather dull for southern Britain and Ireland, with a little rain in the west and a few snow flurries in the east, but southwest England will enjoy bright spells. "Scotland and northern England will be mainly dry with some sunshine, once wintry showers clear the far north. It will be cold in the north and east, with a rather chilly breeze. "Tuesday will be cold and dry for most, but Ireland will see rain moving into the west later. That rain will spread to Britain on Wednesday, bringing more snow to the north."

Meanwhile, thousands of UK passengers have been stranded in the US after flights to Britain were grounded when a massive snowstorm hit the US east coast. It dumped more than three feet of snow from Massachusetts to New Jersey, while hurricane-force winds battered the eastern states and up into Canada, killing at least eight people. Heathrow Airport said 10 inbound flights - all from New York and Boston - were cancelled today, as was one outbound flight to Washington.

British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and Air Canada were all forced to cancel flights, Heathrow said. Passengers were advised to check if their flights are affected with their airlines.
