Arctic winds to bring snow and flood chaos

ARCTIC winds will cause temperatures to fall this week as snow threatens to cause problems in remote parts of the country. Harsh overnight frosts and wintry flurries are expected in the North. Meanwhile, the South is braced for more heavy rain today with the risk of flash floods in regions where the ground is already saturated. The Met Office has a severe weather warning for rain in the South-west, where river levels remain high after persistent downpours. Thermometers are likely to fall by midweek with overnight lows of -4C (25F) in the North and just above freezing in the South. Daytime temperatures will struggle to get out of single figures.

Jonathan Powell, of Vantage Weather Services, said heavy snow will cripple parts of the North. He added: “It is going to turn bitterly cold from Tuesday onwards and this could bring the first widespread frosts across the whole country.

â€œBitter winds from the polar region will send temperatures plummeting this week. With wind chill we could see -7C.†Parts of the UK have already been hit by the first proper snowfall of winter – with three inches falling in Cumbria and parts of County Durham on Saturday.

Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said it is a wet and windy picture right up until December. He said: “There is more wet and windy weather on the way, and this will probably persist through the rest of November. “We are seeing are these low pressure Atlantic systems bringing the unsettled conditions, though they are also bringing unseasonably mild air. “At the weekend, heavy rain will move in from the West with southern regions likely to see the worst of it.â€

Weather forecasting science is being used to predict the most effective ways to fight cancer, experts have revealed.

Met Office techniques have been incorporated into an ‘artificial intelligence’ database containing 1.7billion experimental results. Just as forecasters make their predictions by running information from myriad sources through computers, scientists tapping into the CanSAR database will be guided to the most effective drugs and treatments. British-developed CanSAR brings together vast amounts of data from patients, clinical trials, and genetic and pharmacological research. It condenses more data than would be generated by operating the Hubble Space Telescope for a million years.

Dr Bissan Al-Lazikani, from the Institute of Cancer Research in London, said: ‘The CanSAR database is capable of extraordinarily complex virtual experiments. ‘It can spot opportunities for future cancer treatments that no human eye could be expected to see.’ Research that had previously taken months would now take minutes, he added. Nell Barrie, Cancer Research UK’s senior science information manager, said: ‘The clues we need to tackle cancer are hidden in data like this and by making it freely available we can make breakthroughs sooner.’ CanSAR contains 8million measurements and information on nearly a million active chemical compounds.

'Move Heathrow flights to Gatwick if weather gets bad this winter'

Passengers must expect flight cancellations at Britain's busiest airport if there is bad weather this winter, MPs have been told. Heathrow is running at full capacity and cancellations would be "the most effective way" of dealing with inclement weather, the west London airport's airside operations director Derek Provan said. He was appearing before the House of Commons Transport Committee which is taking evidence on transport's ability to deal with bad winter conditions.

Gatwick airport's corporate affairs director James Colman told the committee the West Sussex airport was keen to discuss flights being moved from Heathrow to Gatwick in the event of severe weather. He added that Gatwick had "not had significant joy" in progressing this idea but that the airport 's chiefs were "very happy to look at how we might be able to do things differently". But British Airways' operations director Andy Lord said that BA was open to looking at the feasibility of the Gatwick suggestion but that the reality was "somewhat different". He added that some BA customers having got to Gatwick would still need to get to Heathrow to make their connections.

The committee's chairman Louise Ellman asked the aviation bosses if they could guarantee that there will be no closed information desks in the event of bad weather. She said closed desks had been a feature of the last winter. Mr Lord said: "I can't guarantee that (that there will be no closed desks). There will be, on occasions, desks that won't have people on them." Mr Colman said he, too, could not guarantee that every help desk would be manned. Mr Provan said that every effort would be made to look after passengers as well as possible if the weather turned particularly bad.

Snowfall will cause havoc for major airports this winter

PASSENGERS will face cancellations and delays at Britain's busiest airport if snow strikes this winter, MPs were told yesterday. Heathrow is running at full capacity and cancellations would be "the most effective way" of dealing with severe weather, airside operations director Derek Provan told the Transport Select Committee. Chairwoman Louise Ellman asked aviation bosses if they could guarantee no closed information desks. British Airways' operations director Andy Lord said: "I can't guarantee that. There will be, on occasions, desks that won't have people on them." He said BA was considering moving some flights from Heathrow to Gatwick in bad weather. But he warned some people diverted to Gatwick would need to then get to Heathrow for connecting flights.

Backlash of the Philippines typhoon is set to batter Britain at Christmas

THE fallout from Super Typhoon Haiyan will wreck our Christmas with storms, high winds and freezing temperatures. Leon Brown, from the Weather Channel, said: “The typhoon will have an effect everywhere. “At the moment warmth and moisture is moving north into China so it will take a couple of weeks before it hits the UK. “We predict that it will change the circulation of the entire northern hemisphere.†Jonathan Powell, of Vantage Weather Services, said: “We are looking at a potentially paralysing winter, the worst for decades which could at times grind the nation to a halt. “Cold snaps with very heavy snowfall are likely."

Last night the storm hit Vietnam, where 13 people were killed and more than 90 injured within an hour. Super Typhoon Haiyan was the worst recorded storm in history with winds upwards of 235mph. Fiona Brookes, of the Campaign Against Climate Change, said: “Climate change means our seasons have moved out of sync. “The UK’s weather system is so complex that we will see more and more extreme weather.â€

Ok, I think that is the most absurd weather story I've seen, managing to top the Express is quite an achievement Daily Star.

Express yet again going with rthe snow-maggedon front page tomorrow.

So was the daily star today, they said that typhoon Haiyon or what remains of it is set to disrupt weather patterns across the northern hemispere with snowmeggedon in two weeks, it all sounded plausible when you read the artical , however they said it was plausible to land a man on mars within ten years..................personally small probabilities are afoot and best on the side of unlikely

Basically the same scaremongering headlines, not really any use even for chip paper:

I haven't read the article relating to Haiyan disrupting NH patterns. With whats going on with the models for a week away, you could say it's already being detected by the computers or that it's just a coincidence. Ideally, would someone more qualified to say "Yup, NH patterns getting churned up because of Haiyan" or "Nope, it's complete B******ks"

Britain braced for 'Polar plunge' as cold winter freeze takes hold

BRITAIN is set to shiver in a ferocious “Polar plunge†with gales and snow crippling parts of the country. A blast of freezing air heading in tomorrow from the Arctic threatens to whip up numbing winds, heavy wintry showers and widespread frosts, forecasters said last night. Temperatures will slide before plunging steeply to feel like -9C (16F) next week with the entire UK braced for the first real taste of winter. Remote parts of the far North could see the mercury plummet as low as -14C with freezing temperatures likely just about everywhere. Parts of the UK already hit by snow are in for more misery while wintry showers are expected to reach higher ground in the South. Up to three inches have brought parts of Cumbria and County Durham to a standstill in recent days and left the region under a white blanket. As it seems we now have to pay for the recent unseasonly mild weather, gritters and snow ploughs have already been mobilised.

Is that even remotely true? I thought it was just a bit of hill snow on the higher peaks?

What really amazes me is how the words 'snow' and 'misery' can be used in the same sentence.

You all do realise that the weather stories that appear in the Star, Express etc aren't actually written by journalists. It's all done by pressing some buttons on a computer.....

Starting random weather story generator.....

Please enter weather type(s)...S=Snow, F=Frost, R=Rain, W=Wind, H=Heatwave, D=Drought....

>SF

Please enter geographical extent...UK,NE,NW,SE,SW......

I don't think that I'm not agree it with Daily Star, just maybe right on that way.

TYPHOON WARNING: Winter weather hell as killer storm heads towards BRITAIN for Christmas.

The fallout from Super Typhoon Haiyan will wreak havoc in Britain throughout winter 2013 with the long range weather forecast warning heavy snow, huge storms, high winds and freezing temperatures are heading to the UK for this Christmas.

Leon Brown, from the Weather Channel, said: “The typhoon will have an effect everywhere.

“At the moment warmth and moisture is moving north into China so it will take a couple of weeks before it hits the UK.

“We predict that it will change the circulation of the entire northern hemisphere.â€

Forecasters have been warning that the entire country is set for a horror freeze this winter which will bring brutal winds and fierce blizzards.

Temperatures have already started to plunge as a swathe of cold air from the Arctic has swept across the UK.

The first long-range forecasts warn of "record breaking snowfall" next month.

Heavy wintry showers are expected to cause widespread chaos with below-average temperatures possibly lingering until February.

Long-range forecasters blamed the position of a fast-flowing band of air known as the jet stream near to Britain and high pressure for the extreme conditions.

Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: 'We are looking at a potentially paralysing winter, the worst for decades, which could at times grind the nation to a halt.

“Very heavy snowfall is likely."

The UK’s weather system is so complex that we will see more and more extreme weather on the way according to the Daily Star reporter.

The answer is no or just maybe right on that way.

I think that the typhoon will have affects everywhere. The typhoon conditions will be a very likely to get the extreme storms with the rain, snow, moistures, huge storms and brutal winds with fierce blizzards are potentially very dangerous winds that could cause blown things away from Saint Jude storm is possible.

I don't think that the typhoon will be a strengthen to be a mega storm with very powerful hurricane strength storms and deadly storms on the way for this winter is possible but I don't be a disagree it with Daily Star. The answers is no.

I'm not forecast with Daily Star either. Anyway, we should be monitor on the way as soon as possible.

Take extras care with everyone in the next few weeks that we should be a monitor on the way with even possible should be sooner or later on.

I've just read this on the bbc and it doesn't quite seem to tie in with the more recent model output.

England 'faces flood risk' as wet November forecast

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24927869

Perhaps it's a story they have been holding onto for a few weeks from when it looked like a more westerly regime was going to dominate this month. Who knows.

I think it's interesting that in the environment agencies winter flood outlook report they are urging people to be prepared. (Admittedly I've not read it, I'm just going off this article). I presume the environment agency would work quite closely with the met office on this so perhaps the met are thinking its going to be a wet winter.
