Wild storms on their way as Britiain is hit with a bitterly cold winter blast

FREEZING temperatures will bring the “first taste of winter†after a weekend of torrential rain and gale-force winds. Gusts of up to 80mph are expected to batter coastal regions today and tomorrow while almost a month’s rain could fall in a matter of hours. The mercury is set to plummet as low as -4C (25F) early next week in remote parts of the North with up to four inches of snow expected on higher ground in Scotland. Elsewhere, daytime highs will struggle to climb out of single figures with strong winds making it feel bitterly cold across the country and overnight frosts will arrive. It will definitely be time to get out the coats, scarves and gloves following the recent mild conditions. That is a stark difference to last week when temperatures peaked at 64F (18C) due to a blast of mild air from the Atlantic. The system was also partly responsible for the St Jude storm which caused havoc around the UK and killed six people.

Cashing in on our misery: Britons forked out £1m to energy firms during megastorm

ENERGY firms netted a £1million windfall from the taxpayer as last week’s killer storm ripped across the country. After 80mph gales swept southern Britain, leaving 500,000 homes without power, much of the electricity generated by the biggest wind farms was deemed surplus to the needs of the National Grid. That triggered compensation payments to some of the Big Six energy companies, who are major investors in the on-shore wind industry. The handouts, known as constraint payments, totalled almost £1million over 24 hours. That brings the total paid out to wind farm owners for unused electricity this year to £26million. The compensation deal will enrage hard-pressed homeowners at a time when they are being hit by inflation-busting price rises of up to 27 per cent. Tory MP Chris Heaton-Harris, who spearheads the parliamentary campaign against on-shore wind farms, branded the payments an outrage.

Stormageddon! Britain set for more catastrophic weather with bone-chilling freeze

BALTIC Britain is set to freeze next week as sub-zero winter weather blows in – only hours after a very soggy weekend. Temperatures are set to plunge from the balmy 20C warmth of October to below zero as the UK falls victim to winter’s icy grip. Last night the Met Office said up to 25mm of rain will soak southern England in the early hours of this morning. And a further 30mm is due on Monday. That’s more than half the 90mm that would normally fall on England during the whole of November. Forecasters have now issued severe weather warnings amid fears parts of Britain could be deluged with floodwater. And only days after some areas have recovered from the mega-storm, the west of the UK will be battered by 65mph winds. Met Office spokesman Helen Chivers said: “It’s going to be an unsettled few days across much of the country. “We will have some wet weather, although it won’t be as bad as last week’s storm.â€

Is this the new title for 'overnight frost' all the article says is...

"""""""And we could see some overnight frost on Monday night, meaning parts of the country would see freezing temperatures"""""""

Its a joke and for publishing such miss leading statements they should be fined.

Totally agree, over hyped headline grabbing to get sales rather than be informative, why I stopped buying such tat years ago.

They will be OK as the technical zeros degrees or less weather means they are not reporting anything incorrectly just inappropriately.

This might be more appropriate in one of the "there's no global warming" threads in the climate area. Do they differentiate between coverage and volume?

RSA shares under the weather as storm and flood claims hit profits

RSA Insurance shares tumbled today after the company warned that severe weather in Europe and Canada is likely to hit its profits this year. The company said damage from the St Jude’s storm at the end of last month was set to cost it up to £65 million, with most of the claims coming from Scandinavia and not the UK.

Flooding in Alberta and Toronto has also hit the insurer heavily and RSA now expects its return on equity to be below 10%. Analysts reckon the weather catastrophe losses could impact its full-year operating profits by about £55 million.

Boss Simon Lee said 2013 had been “an exceptionally tough one for weather events for the groupâ€, while mounting bodily injury claims in Ireland had also impacted its reserves. Shares in the company fell by more than 7% following the warning despite it growing its premiums to £6.7 billion during the first nine months of the year.

Christmas already? No, an early taste of a 'paralysing' winter as snow hits UK

THE first blast from what could be the worst winter in decades hit Britain yesterday – and the question being asked was, will there be a White Christmas? Some northern areas had at least two inches of snow and forecasters warn more falls are expected, with conditions worsening for at least a week. In Teesdale, County Durham, motorists had to clear snow from their cars after heavy wintry showers overnight and road conditions were treacherous. Temperatures plunged below freezing, with lows of -6C (21F) recorded in Kindrogan, Scotland. The early cold snap brought a flurry of bets on a snowy Christmas Day. Coral was offering odds of 3-1 yesterday on snow in Aberdeen, with 4-1 on wintry showers in Edinburgh and Glasgow and 6-1 in London, Birmingham and Manchester. The odds in Bristol, Cardiff and Norwich were 7-1.

Daytime temperatures in the North are expected to hover in single figures for the next few days, falling to zero overnight, with harsh frosts likely. In the South wetter and windier weather is forecast, with a week of rain and gales along western coasts. A bleak winter is now seen as very much on the cards, with the first major snowfall expected in weeks. Forecasters warned in October that the entire UK faces a horror freeze, bringing brutal winds and fierce blizzards. Long-range forecasts predicted “record-breaking snowfall†and low temperatures, possibly until February. Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: “We are looking at a potentially paralysing winter, the worst for decades, which could at times grind the nation to a halt.†Looking at the more short-term picture, he added: “It is going to stay very cold in the North, certainly over the next week or so, with the chance of more snow over high ground.

“In the South it is going to stay wet and windy as a succession of low pressure systems roll in from the Atlantic. “There is still a risk of quite significant stormy weather to come, with strong winds and heavy rain.†The Met Office predicted last night that the weather will be unsettled until the weekend. Forecaster Dan Williams said: “In the North it is going to stay chilly, with more sleet and hail and snow over higher ground. The South is going to be milder, but wet and windy up until the weekend. “Rain is going to move across the region over the next few days.†Netweather forecaster Jo Farrow warned the expected heavy rain could lead to flash floods. She said: “Many parts of England and Wales are already soaking and any extra heavy rain could cause flooding problems.†Meanwhile, Moscow is enjoying freak winter warmth, with temperatures in the Russian capital set to hit 15C (59F) today, breaking a 91-year record.

One of Scotland's five ski centres is preparing to open some of its runs for snowsports on Saturday.

CairnGorm Mountain said skiing and snowboarding would be possible at the Ciste, providing there was not bad weather such as high winds.

Scotland's most recent ski season was one of the busiest in years, according to the sport's national body.

Ski-Scotland said there were 290,996 skier days between November last year and May 2013.

Skiing and snowboarding at CairnGorm, Glencoe, Glenshee, NevisRange and The Lecht was also estimated to have raised more than £29m for the economy.

The season was the best since 2009-10, when there were a record 374,789 skier days.

A skier day means one person who skis or snowboards on one day. Many

Britain to be battered by heavy rain and wind over the weekend

BRITAIN is about to take another battering from the elements as more stormy weather rolls in at the weekend.Heavy rain and wind will hit parts of the country thanks to a low pressure system sweeping in from the Atlantic. Forecasters warned the more unsettled conditions will arrive tomorrow in the West before another hammering on Sunday. However it will feel much warmer with mild air pushing temperatures to around 61F (16C) - well above-average for the time of year. The Met Office warned wind and rain looks set to rumble through this month with the North and West in for the worst of it.

Forecaster Dan Williams said: “Rain across southeastern England will clear on Tuesday morning with sunny spells and scattered showers following elsewhere, showers locally heavy and thundery across the north and west. “It will be breezy with local gales across the North. By Wednesday, there should be more sunshine and fewer showers across the country with lighter winds. “From Thursday to Saturday, southern areas should enjoy drier and brighter weather with lighter winds although with a fog and frost risk, whilst northern parts will be more unsettled with rain and stronger winds. “These unsettled conditions look set to return to the whole of the UK with the heaviest rain across the North and Westâ€Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said it is a wet and windy picture right up until December. He said: “There is more wet and windy weather on the way, and this will probably persist through the rest of November. “We are seeing are these low pressure Atlantic systems bringing the unsettled conditions, though they are also bringing unseasonably mild air. “At the weekend, heavy rain will move in from the West with southern regions likely to see the worst of it.â€

Netweather forecaster Jo Farrow said: “Friday night sees more heavy showers, lines coming in from the west as the temperatures fall away. “Scotland and N.Ireland will be close to freezing, so ice may become a problem “Saturday we are in colder air. Through the morning wet and windy weather could sweep across England and Wales making it feel miserable. “Later on Saturday the wind veers to the north-west and skies clear and it will feel cold out and about in the evening.  “Then a total change, cloud and rain and strong southerly winds will sweep across ... western Britain on Sunday morning. “On Monday a cold front pushes down from the North, subduing the temperatures over northern Britain. “However further south, still in the mild air, with the cloud and rain there could be [a temperature of] 16C (61F).â€
