Weather: Downpours As Summer Getaway Begins

Britain's longest heatwave for seven years comes to an abrupt end with heavy rain and storms - just as the school holidays start.

Italy is thought to be experiencing its hottest weekend of the summer so far, with the mercury hitting 38C (100F) in Rome yesterday.

A strong heatwave coming from Africa and nicknamed 'Charon' by local forecasters is running over Italy with temperatures set to rise up to 40C (104F) in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Austria's capital Vienna saw temperatures reach 36C (97F) and Berlin in Germany recorded a high of 35C (95F) on Saturday.

Even higher temperatures are expected over the next few days.

Latest WSI forecast

WSI: Much of Western Europe to Return to Cooler Temperatures in August

Warm, Dry Summer Weather to be Less Frequent Going Forward

Andover, Mass. (24 July 2013) — Weather Services International (WSI) expects temperatures for the upcoming period (August-October) to average lower than normal across UK, Iberia, southern Norway, and the western half of the mainland, with above-normal temperatures elsewhere. Said WSI chief meteorologist Dr. Todd Crawford:

“We have seen a dramatic reversal of the pattern during July, as high pressure and very warm, dry weather has become established across western Europe, a pattern which has not observed very often since 2006. Obviously, the difficult forecast problem heading into August is determining whether this new regime will persist, or if a return to lower pressure and cooler, gloomier conditions is in the cards for western Europe. The latest model guidance does suggest that a return to lower pressure is on the way by early August, but historical data suggests that the July pattern is more likely than not to persist into August. For now, we have generally persisted our previous forecast, which is slanted more towards the idea of a return to cooler temperatures across much of western Europe.â€

In August, WSI forecasts:

  • [*]
Nordic Region – Cooler than normal southern Sweden/Norway, warmer than normal elsewhere [*]UK – Warmer than normal, except for Southeast [*]Northern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except for western France and Poland [*]Southern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except Portugal and far Southeast

In September, WSI forecasts:

  • [*]
Nordic Region – Cooler than normal southern Sweden/Norway, warmer than normal elsewhere [*]UK – Cooler than normal [*]Northern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except Poland [*]Southern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except SW Iberia and far Southeast

In October, WSI forecasts:

  • [*]
Nordic Region – Warmer than normal [*]UK – Cooler than normal [*]Northern Mainland – Cooler than normal west, warmer than normal east [*]Southern Mainland – Cooler than normal west, warmer than normal east

WSI provides customized weather information to global commodity traders via its industry-leading WSI Trader Web site. WSI will issue its next seasonal outlook on 21 August.

Back with a bang! Heatwave set to return with temperatures soaring to 32C thanks to 'Spanish Plume' of hot air

Too hot? Wait till we’re hit by ‘Spanish plume’

A “SPANISH plume†of hot air will see Britain sizzle this week in what may be the hottest burst of summer so far. The scorching Continental blast threatens to send the mercury rocketing higher than 95F (35C) by Thursday. Forecasters say most places face “intense and extreme heat†which could exceed the near-record highs from the beginning of July. They warn it will feel “extremely humid†as the swathe of hot air floods in from Spain, with temperatures there set to hit 104F (40C).

Heatwave will be back next week

ANOTHER week of roasting temperatures is on the cards as the sweltering summer weather continues.  After a “thundery blip†tomorrow, with showers and storms likely in many regions, Monday will see the sunshine return. Though temperatures will not be as high as last week’s record 93F (34C) they could reach 82F in the South-east, above average for August. Brian Gaze, forecaster for The Weather Outlook, said: “Weekend temperatures should peak close to 79F. There will be more warm sunshine next week with 82F possible.â€

Big rush for the beach as it shore is hot

SCORCHING sunshine is set to spark a rush to the beach this weekend as Britain roasts in 25C heat. Day-trippers will flock to the coast in droves with, 100,000 people expected in Brighton alone. And tourist destinations are expecting bumper takings in a sizzling summer that has seen Brits splash out a whopping £12billion on staycations. Forecaster Brian Gaze, of The Weather Outlook, said: “Weekend temperatures should peak close to 26C in southern and central regions with plenty of dry and sunny weather to accompany the warmth. It looks likely summer weather will continue next week, with more warm sunshine and 28C possible, with the best conditions probably in the south-east.†Meanwhile, the heatwave took a tragic turn last night as it emerged it had sparked a series of accidents. http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/330240/Big-rush-for-the-beach-as-it-shore-is-hot

A look at the weather with Nathan Rao and Michael Fish

MICHAEL told us last month that he wilts at temperatures above 70F (21C). Luckily he survived the longest heatwave since 1976.  The big question now is whether the heat will last? After all there is another month of summer left.

Michael thinks “to some extent†it will, at least in the South, and he was spot on last month about predicting the scorching July. He said: “The feeling in my waters is that in the South-east the first half of August will be quite warm and reasonably settled although with showers and cooler than of late. “It is a different picture in the North where it is more unsettled, cooler with more rain and even some gales. Michael added: “Most of the raging heat in the next two weeks is going to be saved for the Continent where 40C-plus (104F) is likely. There is no chance of that coming to the UK. There is still the chance of things going bang at the beginning of the month with more thunderstorms on the way.â€

If anyone missed the heat worry not, there is a chance of a repeat next year if some theories are to be believed. Michael explained: “Climate change indicates more dry hot spells in summer whereas a recent study of North Atlantic temperature anomalies indicates cooler and wetter ones.

Our man Nathan was talking to former BBC weather broadcaster Michael Fish.

Flood Warning As Heavy Rain Sweeps Across UK

Parts of the UK have been warned of possible flooding as a band of rain spreads across the country.

A huge rain band spreading from southwest England to southern Scotland has brought a warning of possible flooding from the Met Office. A "be aware" alert has been issued for the western half of England, Wales and the Borders, with up to 2.3ins (60mm) of rain possible in parts of the south west. The warning also covers Todmorden, in West Yorkshire, which was hit by up to 18in (46cm) of water a week ago after a cloudburst and torrential rain.

While the heavy rain is bad news for most it could help England's campaign to retain the Ashes, forcing a draw in the third Test. Old Trafford woke to persistent rain which will linger throughout the afternoon, only clearing by early evening, says Sky News weather presenter Sarah Pennock.

For other areas, she said: "A band of slow-moving rain will extend from southwest England to southeast Scotland today, bringing  tricky driving conditions and localised flooding. "The heaviest rain will effect northern and western parts of England and Wales - here we could see up to two inches of rain in places." Pennock added: "It's a very different story for Ireland and much of Scotland - there it will be drier and brighter with sunny spells.  "Tuesday and Wednesday will be an improving story for most with drier conditions, some sunshine and temperatures peaking around 24C in the South East."

The rain and cooler temperatures follows weeks of hot weather which saw Thursday, August 1, become the hottest day of the year so far in the UK, when 34.1C was recorded at Heathrow. The previous highest temperature was 33.5C which was recorded at both Northolt and Heathrow on July 22.

Ben Chu: The weather is kind when it's raining excuses

Outlook Isn't the British weather wonderful? It saved England from defeat against the resurgent Australians and it's also been putting a rocket under retail sales. But the weather's usefulness doesn't end there. Greggs the baker yesterday blamed the recent fine weather for a decline in sales in the first half of the year. Too hot for sausage rolls, apparently. That followed a profit warning in April which Greggs blamed on the cold winter. Must have been too cold for sausage rolls back then.

Anyone can play this game. Recall that George Osborne blamed snow for the economy's slump in late 2011. In the City they say the trend is your friend. But for those looking for excuses for weak performance, the weather is even friendlier.

Heat hits Greggs

HIGH Street baker Greggs has seen sales slump in the heatwave as it reported a £2million profit fall.  The 1,700-strong chain, based in Newcastle, took a like-for-like sales hit of 3.2% in the five weeks to August 3.
