British hot weather to continue into weekend

Police warn of dangers of open water after teenager dies while cooling off in above average temperatures for July

The hot weather across much of the UK is expected to last into the weekend. Temperatures will temporarily dip midweek to the low 20s before soaring again on Friday, possibly lasting through until Sunday. London is expected to see the best of the sweltering temperatures on Tuesday, while the north of England will also climb to around 28C (82.4F), finally enjoying the same highs as the south after averaging around 24C over the last few days. The weekend of glorious weather continued as people returned to work on Monday, with a high of 29.6C recorded in Lee-on-Solent in Hampshire, just shy of the 29.7C reached in Bournemouth on Sunday, the hottest day of the year so far.

However, it was markedly cooler across the North Sea coast of England and Scotland, where Donna Nook in Lincolnshire peaked at only 16C. While the sunshine was not unusual for July it was above average, said Andy Ratcliffe, meteorologist for MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association. "In the middle part of the week the weather will get cooler but still warm, to around the low 20s," he said. "But it will pick up again in time for the weekend and should last through to Sunday. "Past that it is hard to be certain, but we don't have much rain at all forecast for the next seven to 10 days."

Police have warned of the dangers of cooling off in open water after a 17-year-old boy died while swimming in a lake at an old quarry in Worcestershire. Russell O'Neill, of Worcester, had been swimming at Gullet Quarry near Malvern when he failed to resurface on Saturday afternoon. The teenager's body was recovered by a dive team from South Wales police at around 4.50pm. West Mercia police said they were not treating his death as suspicious. Speaking after the incident on Saturday, Detective Inspector Richard Reese said: "This appears to have been a tragic accident and our thoughts are with the boy's family and friends at this sad time. "While it is too early to give a cause of death, we would like to take this opportunity to remind people about the dangers of open water.

"With the warm weather upon us and the school holidays approaching, we would advise people to think twice about going into local rivers, lakes and canals in order to cool off. "We are privileged to live and work in a beautiful part of the country with a huge area of water. However, this comes with its dangers and we would appeal for people to recognise the risks associated with water and act responsibly."

Heatwave to continue for at least another WEEK with no end in sight for glorious weather

BRITAIN will roast for at least another week with no immediate end in sight to the blistering heatwave. The entire country is baking in well above-average temperatures with this weekend expected to heat up even more. Forecasters last night said Britain could see the record for the highest ever temperature broken with thermometers poised to break the 100F (38C) mark.

Ah, so the likelihood of us breaking the 100F barrier depends on how many fools put bets on it, does it? With logic like that, it's hardly any wonder the country's going to the dogs!Posted Image

Well at least the Daily Star Has a more sensible take on it than the Express which as usual with a story like this goes into overdrive with predictions here there and everywhere

This bit had me wondering:

"By tomorrow, the hot spell will be Britain’s longest since 2006 with temperatures not dropping below 81F for nine consecutive days."

There aren't that many places that have reached 81°F at all yet, let alone not dropping below it!

I think you'll get your hottest day in the Metropolis today so far and possibly in outlying areas too. Would be nice if it had a drop of thunder and lightning as well eh?

Heatwave: Hottest Day Of The Year So Far

Temperatures reach 30C as the public is urged to take care in the potentially "dangerous" heatwave conditions.

It has been the UK's hottest day of the year so far after temperatures reached 30C at Heathrow and Exeter airports, according to provisional Met Office figures. They topped the previous high of 29.9C recorded at Edenfel, County Tyrone in Northern Ireland last Monday. The heat has prompted warnings from health authorities urging the public to take care in the potentially "dangerous" heatwave conditions.

The hot spell shows no sign of ending with temperatures set to remain in the mid-to-high 20s well into next week.

Weather Online's monthly outlook

Valid from 13/07 to 12/08 2013
Breakdown hints

Issued: Saturday 13th July 2013
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling & Captain Bob

A gentle breakdown into more unsettled weather for early August

The fine spell of weather we have been experiencing for the last couple of weeks does look set to continue for a couple of weeks yet. However, there are signs of a 'soft breakdown' in conditions towards the end of July. These probably first noticed in the south, then edging north. Early August may be more unsettled before an improvement takes place again into the middle of August.

*......20/7/13*

Another fine and sunny week is expected with high pressure dominating the weather across the British Isles. Conditions are likely to be mainly dry, and it will be very warm at times too. There will be some fronts brushing close to northern Scotland from time to time, these bringing some outbreaks of rain, but for most it stays dry. Later in the week there are hints that the northeast wind may increase through southern England. This could bring some rain or drizzle into East Anglia and the southeast later.

*21/7/13 to 27/7/13*

Pressure is likely to be falling to the south of the country during this week, although high pressure holds to the north. This could lead to a gentle breakdown in the fine and dry conditions as easterly winds set in the the south, bringing an increased risk of some thunderstorms from the continent.
Most of northern England, Scotland and Ireland are likely to be staying dry for much of the week. It is likely to be warm too, although eastern coasts always cooler.

*28/7/13......3/8/13*

A ridge of high pressure across more southern parts of the Uk this week probably keeps conditions on the dry side here. There will be sunny spells, although the risk of some light rain at times, especially in the west, can't be completely ruled out. It is likely to start dry across Scotland, although later we may find some rain bands moving in as the jet stream strengthens again to the north of the UK. Temperatures above normal for most.

*4/8/13......10/8/13*

The jet stream continues to strengthen close to northern Scotland. This allows more active fronts to move in and bring some periods of rain here. Northern England and Northern Ireland may see some spells of rain too, most affecting the west. More southern areas of the UK will be in drier conditions, although there will be some rain at times. This most notably over west wales and southern Ireland, with some damper days possible in southwest England too. Temperatures cooler in Scotland, near normal over southern England.

*11/8/13......17/8/13*

It could be that during this week the ridge to the south strengthens again. This brings a drier week to Ireland, Wales and the southern half of England with warmer temperatures. Some rain still affecting the northwest of England and Scotland, but tending to become confined to the far north later on.

Britain sizzles in heatwave that could beat 1976 scorcher

BRITAIN is sweltering in the fiercest heatwave for seven years – and experts claim scorching conditions could continue for two months.  Temperatures hit a searing 89F (31.4C) on Saturday, making it the hottest day of the year so far, while widespread highs above 81F yesterday for the ninth day in a row makes this the longest sunshine super-spell since 2006. And there is no immediate end in sight – with at least another two weeks of blistering heat on the way and thermometers likely to hit 95F. Forecaster revealed the UK could be facing the longest heatwave on record with sky-high temperatures – threatening to stretch through August and beating the historic scorcher of 1976.

The Met Office last night extended a Level 2 health alert into this week and warned high pressure causing extreme heat will stay wedged over the UK until the end of the month. The warning had hit Level 3 on Saturday – the last step before emergency measures come in.

Netweather’s Nick Finnis added: “The rest of the week looks to remain generally fine, dry and sunny. Southern areas will see the highest temperatures.â€

UK hot weather to last until next weekend, say forecasters

Saturday was hottest July day since 2006, peaking at 31.9C in Southampton

The recent blazing temperatures in the UK are set to linger into the start of the school summer break, according to forecasters.

Saturday was the hottest day of the year so far and the hottest July day since 2006, with the mercury peaking at 31.9C (89.4F) in Southampton. The hot spell of weather will last into next weekend when many primary and secondary schools will have finished for the year and the six-week summer holiday will stretch ahead. On Sunday temperatures will dip slightly but are still likely to top 30C (86F) in England and Wales, particularly in the south.

Temperatures for the rest of the week will range between the mid to high 20s, with the exception of Wednesday which could top 32C. Gareth Harvey, forecaster for the MeteoGroup, said on Sunday: "Today is going to be another hot day, not quite as hot as yesterday but a few places will see 30C. There will be a bit of cloud across eastern areas and a few sharp showers in the south-east but it will still be very pleasant. It will be cooler in Northern Ireland and Scotland, where it only reached 24C (75.2F) yesterday."

The heatwave has prompted warnings from health authorities urging the public to take care in the potentially dangerous conditions. Retailers and supermarket giants reported booming sales figures as the soaring heat saw shoppers spend thousands on the high street and in an online blitz on barbecues, food, sunscreen and garden furniture. Asda said sales of barbecues had risen 204% in the past two weeks, with charcoal and fuel up 176%. It said paddling pool sales were up 446% and garden furniture up 44% as Britons dined al fresco.

Last weekend alone Asda sold 3m sausages and 1.4m burgers. Tesco predicted it would sell 9m sausages this weekend and sales of its summer fruits soared. Emergency services warned against swimming in open waters and quarries after three people died in the West Midlands in the past week. John Woodhall, a water rescue specialist with West Midlands ambulance service, said: "How many more people need to die before someone takes notice of our warnings of the dangers of swimming in open waters?

"Quarries are not like swimming pools. The water is much colder. You go from 28C outside to 10C (50F) in the water. You can get muscle cramps and stitches. The bottom is uneven. There are no depth markings. Even strong swimmers can slip underwater and you may not make it back up again." Commander George Marshall, of Hereford and Worcester fire and rescue service, said: "Please think twice about going into open water and if you must take a dip please do it in the safety of a public swimming pool where there are lifeguards on duty."

Superintendent Ivan Powell, of West Mercia police, echoed the message, saying: "Particularly in view of the current hot spell we would urge people not to go into rivers, lakes, ponds and canals to try to cool off. People need to recognise the risks associated with water and act responsibly."

Heatwave set to continue around UK

The heatwave currently hitting many parts of the UK is set to continue for at least another week, forecasters say.

The BBC weather centre said conditions would become more unsettled in northern areas towards the end of July, with the south enjoying warm weather for longer. On Saturday, the highest temperature in the UK this year, 31.4C, was recorded at Heathrow. And motorists faced disruption on Sunday afternoon when a section of the M25 was closed after the road melted. It was shut near to junction 23, near Potters Bar in Hertfordshire, on the clockwise carriageway due to severe surface damage. The Highways Agency said it re-opened at 05:30 BST on Monday after emergency resurfacing. "It is regrettable that drivers were stuck in traffic on such a hot Sunday afternoon, but the precaution was taken to close the carriageway after a defect across three lanes led to safety concerns," a spokesperson said.

'Baking conditions'

Monday will be another warm and sunny day across much of the UK, with maximum temperatures of 30C, although parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland will see some cloud and patchy rain. BBC forecaster Nick Miller said high pressure was still dominating and the "baking conditions" would persist in many areas until the middle of next week. The UK has been basking in above-average temperatures for the past week.

Wales saw its highest 2013 temperature of 30.2C at Llysdinam on Saturday. The highest temperature recorded for Northern Ireland was 29.9C on 8 July at Edenfel, County Tyrone. Scotland saw its highest 2013 temperature on 9 July, with 28.7C at Strathallen Airfield. The Met Office has issued a heatwave alert for the East Midlands, East of England, south-east England and London. The Level Two yellow alert means there is a high chance that a heatwave will occur within the next few days. The alert is part of the Heat-Health Watch system, which operates in England and Wales from 1 June to 15 September in association with the Department of Health.

There are four levels of response, based on maximum daytime temperatures - ranging from 28C in north-east England to 32C in London - and a minimum night temperature of 15C. Sunbathers, sport-watchers and barbecue fans have welcomed the hot weather. Retailers have reported booming sales as the heat saw shoppers spend thousands of pounds on the high street and online on barbecues, food, sunscreen and garden furniture.

David Jones, Waitrose supply chain director, said: "When temperatures reach the 'tipping point' of 28C (82.4F) we see customers switching from ice creams to ice lollies and from fizzy pop to mineral water-based drinks as rehydration becomes more important." Asda said sales of barbecues had soared by 204% in the last two weeks, with charcoal and fuel sales up 176%. The supermarket also said shoppers were keen to cool off, with paddling pool sales up 446% and sales of garden furniture up 44% as Britons indulged in al fresco dining. But many shoppers avoided stressful and sweaty trips to the shops by turning to the internet.

Online retailer Amazon said that, compared with this time last year, sales had increased by 816% for paddling pools; 519% for sprinklers and sprayers; 543% for patio chairs and loungers; and 145% for sun skincare products. But the hot weather is not good news for everyone. The very young, the elderly and the seriously ill are the groups who are particularly at risk of health problems when the weather is very hot. In particular, very hot weather can make heart and breathing problems worse. The NHS says the main risks posed by a heatwave are dehydration, overheating, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. It advises those who are vulnerable to the effects of heat not to go out in the sun between 11:00 and 15:00 - the hottest part of the day. It also recommends that people drink cold drinks regularly.

Heatwave will last ALL summer: Fears for elderly as baking Britain gets even hotter

SCORCHING Britain will get even hotter from today as some forecasters predict the longest heatwave in history.  And as the heatwave enters its 11th day experts say stubborn high pressure responsible for the sizzling spell could even cause Britain to swelter through August. The Met Office is warning that today or tomorrow could be the hottest so far, beating the 89F at Heathrow on Saturday. But as it extended a level 2 heat health alert to tomorrow, there were fears that the extreme conditions could lead to thousands of deaths with experts warning that the elderly, very young and those with chronic illness are most at risk. Forecaster Sarah Holland said: “We are expecting it to get even hotter over the next few days. In the South-east we are looking at the 32C (90F) mark, beating the weekend highs, and it is going to be very warm through this week.â€

Jonathan Powell, of Vantage Weather Services, forecast that this summer will see “all sorts of records brokenâ€. He said: “If this continues we are looking at the longest heatwave since 1976, with temperatures consistently soaring into the high 80s and 90s. “There is no end in sight to this. Current systems show it could last through August with the chance of 100F before things start cooling down. In terms of maximum temperatures and the extreme prolonged nature of this heatwave, this summer could see all sorts of records tumble.â€
