Reports all over the place and understandably, there are conflicting stories. I tend to go with Reuters at the moment who report:

A fire broke out at Tohoku Electric Power Co's (9506.T) Onagawa nuclear plant in northeastern Japan following Friday's major earthquake, Kyodo news agency said. Prior to the Kyodo report, the company had said it had not received information on whether there had been any problems at the nuclear power plant after the disaster.

Separately, Fukushima Prefecture, the site of a Tokyo Electric Power (9501.T) nuclear power plant, said on Friday the plant's reactor cooling system was functioning, denying an earlier report that it was malfunctioning. Japanese media reported that the government had decided to declare a nuclear power emergency situation, which occurs if there is confirmation of radioactivity leaks from a nuclear power plant or a reactor cooling system breaks down

I think the ship concerns are centred around this story:

Reuters quotes a report on Japan's Kyodo news agency which says that a ship carrying 100 people was swept away by the tsunami.

I don't have a subscription to the Kyodo news agency to get more details, but here are some pictures courtesy of their site:

Seems to be a worrying trend for large magnitude earthquakes in the last 7 years. Dec 26, 2004 8.9 off Sumatra island, Indonesia triggered a severe tsunami, killing over 220,000 in Indonesia and nearby countries, including India; March 28, 2005: 8.5 again in the sea off Indonesia's Sumatra Island; May 12, 2008: 8.0 hit southwestern China's Wenchuan county, killing about 70,000; Feb 27, 2010: 8.8 quake struck southern Chile, triggering tsunami in the region. Before that we have to go back to the 1960s for an earthquake of magnitude over 8, and then there were 2 in 1960 and then in 1964. And since 1900, only 1906. Seems the earth is in an increasing state of upheaval currently :(

Japanese government have now ordered evacuation of the 3,000 or so people living within 2km of the plant - on that scale, it's probably precautionary - if there was a serious issue, they'd be evacuating a lot further away than that.

I wonder if this was a Warning of what was to come just 2 days earlier ??

I thought earthquakes were to do with the Earth's plates, not the sun?

The seismograms from UK stations show the power of the quake (look at the long period charts) especially when compared to the 7.1 quake a couple of days ago. You can also see the planet is still ringing!

OK this need s to be confirmed..someone saying on FB a article saying 88,000 missing

Yes, at first the BBC said 88,000 went missing.

It was since then revised down to 500.

Yep, there's alot of serious misreporting going on by the sounds of it.....the problem is, is that it could take days before the real extent of this disaster is fully known....In reply to an earlier post, the claims of 33ft high tsunamis hitting Hawaii are thankfully exaggerated...It seems wave heights were approx 1 metre

Amazing films from the area. Just watching the news listening too a expert saying "well at least the houses didn't fall down" behind the film shows the houses being washed away instead. Sort of made the comment pointless.

Another day another huge earthquake for the stretched resources of the world to respond too. Sadly countries still needing aid will be forgotten.

I'm also wondering about the fault in Tokyo bay which has had one hell of a jolt.

Minor radiation leak possible at one power plant has been announced recently.

Death toll will be fairly large due to the time that quake occurred and very small time before the wave struck. This meant many people were at work and out and about.

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
