Reports coming in of an earth tremor affecting parts of northwest England a short while ago. Some of my friends text me saying there houses were shaking...anyone here experience it?

Just seen the report, I didn't feel anything unusual here in Staffs...

3.5 quakes are very minor affairs .... you should try a 7.1!

4.0 and above you will feel!

It depends if this quake is the result of the residual P-Wave from Japans 7.4 quake earlier. The Cumbrian quake could simply be a "trigger" quake from the result of that P-Wave hitting. I've seen a few widespread reports already of vibrational tremors, and "bangs" being felt along the South Coast, London, Yorkshire, Liverpool, even I personally felt sensationary P-Wave motion around 11pm (before the Cumbrian P-Waves from that quake alone would have had time to pass if they were strong enough itself.)

Just something to throw into the mix when theres already nationwide reports of "other" odd phenomenon the same time this was going on.

i remember that one that hit in feb 2008 near market rasen think it was 5.2 was pretty scary at the time

Seismic data for Keswick. 1800 is the P-Wave from the Japanese Quake as mentioned previously.

It's definately an earquake, I didnt feel it because I was working, but people in Manchester had felt it!

Actually, my shed is now a cold store for food that won't fit in the fridge, but the trouble is even with 800w of heat in there 24/7, and despite being within a large paper bag, and in a dustbin, my spuds are frozen. Didn't stop my wife looking at me last night, with eyes ablaze, only for me to tell her that no, it was an earthquake. I actually thought a helicopter was going overhead as we sometimes have low flying Chinooks sweeping the area (probably looking for me) and it was a very rhythmic thudding going on.

Just on sky news a small earthquake in northern england!

Hi all, first post.
We're in North Yorkshire (Wensleydale) and felt it quite strongly, but not enough for any damage.
Felt very wierd though.

Centre near Leeds. 3.7 according to USGS http://earthquake.us.../quakes_all.php
Page not available for some reason on the BGS site. Maybe the earthquake affected it.

Seems it was in Ripon.

By the way, the bgs site have a page asking people to record where and what they felt for any quakes in the UK so I am sure would like some of the above posters to record the experience.

I suspect 3.7 will be downgraded: neither the UKGS nor the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre have even registered it so far. Also, it's unusual for the USGS to bother with anything outside the US below mag 5. Must have been an interesting few minutes for those who experienced it, however.
