22nd and 23rd January 1897 were very wintry days across many parts of the UK with gale force NEly winds, blizzards and drifting snow.

Here are some reports from that period

22nd January

Finchley: Snow much drifted.

Kensworth: Great snow storm, drfits 15ft deep, roads and lane blocked

Hedsor: NE gale and much snow

Oxford: Blizzard at 4pm, one inch of snow fell in 20 minutes

Clifton: Blizzard and darkness at 3pm

Gloucester: Blizzard

Ross-on-Wye: Blizzard at 2.30pm

Louth: Thunder, lightning and snow

Astle Hall: Blowing a gale from the NE, a regular blizzard

Horncastle: Fearful snowstorms with deep drifts

Hitchin: Snow drifts, many roads blocked

Norwich: Blinding snowstorms, drifting

Manchester: snowstorm on 22nd, and snow on the 24th, 25th, 26th and 29th

23rd January

Kensington: NE gales with snow showers

Sheppey: Severe snow storms, 4 inches of snow

Rochester: Very severe blizzard from NE

Lewes: Heavy falls of snow

Addington: A very wild day with great drifts
