Hmm, a bit of a wishy washy outlook compared to the last couple of days. However, in isolation this outlook would look pretty good, it's just that expectations have somewhat risen during the last few days. Interest continues!

Peculiar downgrade made for no apparent reason by the Met Office.

Met Office's first real hint of maybe something wintry for Xmas

UK Outlook for Thursday 17 Dec 2009 to Saturday 26 Dec 2009:

The cold weather continues with a biting northeasterly wind and some sleet or snow showers. These are likely to be most frequent in eastern parts with the risk of some heavy snow over high ground. Western parts of the UK will be mostly dry and have the best of the sunshine. From Saturday (19th) until Monday (21st) the weather remains cold with overnight frost and some icy surfaces. Further rain, sleet and snow showers are likely in eastern and northeastern parts but with a risk of the wintry weather spreading to many parts of the UK. Breezy at times and feeling very cold in the wind. From Monday (21st) until Boxing Day (26th) it looks like staying cold with further wintry showers.

UK Outlook for Friday 18 Dec 2009 to Sunday 27 Dec 2009:

Initially it looks likely to be cold with sleet and snow showers, most of which will fall in northern and eastern areas, giving accumulations of snow in places. There is also the risk of some more persistent sleet or snow at times in northern parts whereas the driest conditions are most likely to occur in the south and west. There is also a risk of freezing fog patches. Many parts windy with a significant wind chill making it feel very cold. As we move into the following week we are likely to see a period of sleet and snow moving northwards across the UK, turning to rain in the south. Then, over the Christmas period we currently expect unsettled and occasionally windy conditions, and perhaps turning less cold at times.

Disappointingly, the latest meto update is backing the GFS 00z run with mild air winning out over christmas, probably before the big day although that can and probably will change. I'm surprised at the meto for ignoring both the ecm 00z and gfs 6z, seems a bit strange. They say less cold at times but i'm sure that's just to keep the coldies from feeling too upset, thanks meto.

Hi,

Another really assertive forecast then from HQ!

Lots of the usual, looks, likely, risk of, perhaps and at times, (north and south of where?)

The forecast indicates the Met' O' have very low confidence in what will happen towards Christmas and beyond and who can blame them. All the caveats are there not to annoy the cold lovers among us but to keep their options open as things develop.

UK Outlook for Saturday 19 Dec 2009 to Monday 28 Dec 2009:

Cloudy with rain, sleet or snow in the north throughout with some significant snowfall possible over high ground and hills in Scotland and northwestern England. Most southern and central parts should be dry and cold with bright or sunny spells at first, but cloud and rain, sleet or snow in the north will gradually spread southwards to many areas during the week. Temperatures are likely to be rather cold or cold throughout, especially overnight, with frosts and icy conditions in many parts. Over the Christmas period it is likely to remain unsettled in most areas with further outbreaks of rain, sleet or snow. It may become milder from the south towards the end of the period.

No. But then, I wasn't 'appearing' to disparage the MetO! :p

Rain, sleet or snow, may turn milder...thats precise!

I also though hills and highground were the same thing!

Must stop reading these summaries, they are very poor. Most folk on NetweatherTV could produce much a better presentation.

Agreed C - it does seem that even to appear to question the MO on here meets with howls of derision and accusations of unfounded critisism towards them. Whilst I was lurking I clearly wasn't concentrating on the nuances of what goes on in these forums, but after only 72hrs of posting I've become very aware and increasingly guarded.

Eh???

UK Outlook for Sunday 20 Dec 2009 to Tuesday 29 Dec 2009:

A mixture of sunny spells and showers or longer outbreaks of rain or snow will affect most parts at first, with some significant snowfall possible, particularly for Scotland and northern England. Cold generally, with the northwesterly winds making it feel even colder, and with frosty and icy surfaces in places. From Christmas Eve onwards, it is likely to remain unsettled and wintry in most northern areas with further outbreaks of rain, sleet or snow. Further south, cloud and rain seems likely to spread northwards, but quite probably preceded by a spell of snow in places. Temperatures may recover to near or above normal in parts of the south towards the end of the period, although this aspect is uncertain.

Looks very much in agreement with the update to the monthly forecast I put up on here today, especially regarding the timing of the breakdown and the chances of it struggling to affect northern districts by Christmas Day.

All very interesting.

Although a little delay in that timing will make some Punters at the Bookies pleased, even though any accumulation would be a short lived affair.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 22 Dec 2009 to Thursday 31 Dec 2009:

It looks likely to be generally unsettled next week with a mixture of clear or brighter spells and showers or longer spells of rain, sleet or snow across most parts. Some heavier precipitation is likely but across southern areas the precipitation looks more likely to fall as rain or sleet. Cold, especially across northern areas with overnight frosts and icy surfaces in places. Windy at times too making it feel even colder. By next weekend it looks like the unsettled weather is set to continue but with the main sleet and snow risk continuing in the north. Temperatures may recover to near or above normal in parts of the south towards the end of the period but more wintry weather may continue in the north, although this aspect is uncertain.

UK Outlook for Thursday 24 Dec 2009 to Saturday 2 Jan 2010:

It will remain unsettled and often windy during the Christmas period with a mixture of brighter spells and showers or longer spells of rain, sleet or snow likely across many areas. The precipitaion will be occasionally heavy. Across southern areas, it is possible it will become less cold during this period with precipitation perhaps turning to rain. Otherwise it continues generally cold, particularly across northern areas with overnight frosts and icy surfaces. Over the weekend and into the following week, staying unsettled and mostly cold. The main sleet and snow risk will continue in the north, whilst the south sees some occasionally less cold spells with rain rather than sleet or snow. As 2010 arrives, still cold and unsettled for many, and chilly northwesterly winds.

UK Outlook for Friday 1 Jan 2010 to Sunday 10 Jan 2010:

On Friday, and over next weekend it is expected to be generally cold with overnight frosts across most areas and occasional wintry showers affecting northern and eastern areas. There is also a risk of some rain or sleet, which may be persistent at times, affecting parts of the south over the weekend. Drier across central and western areas with overnight freezing fog which may persist locally. The following week looks likely to remain cold or even very cold in places, although perhaps closer to normal in the far south at times. Wintry showers look set to continue to affect northern and eastern areas for the rest of the period. There will be a further risk of bands of rain or sleet affecting southern parts at times.

UK Outlook for Sunday 3 Jan 2010 to Tuesday 12 Jan 2010:

There will be a good deal of fine, dry and bright but cold weather across the UK from Sunday and through next week. Sleet and snow showers will affect many northern and eastern parts at times, perhaps becoming more persistent and spreading into some other regions from the middle of next week. Nights will be frosty, with frost locally severe in some areas, and overnight freezing fog will be slow to clear from some inland parts. There is uncertainty from next weekend onwards through the rest of the period with the strongest signal for the weather to remain generally cold with occasional wintry showers, though some western and southwestern parts may become less cold for a time.
