I do remember one big thunderstorm in the middle of that summer which hit in the evening and seemed to go on all night. It may have been on the above date, but I don't remember.

There was an even bigger thunderstorm here on the night of 4-5th September, not long after the hot dry summer finally broke. I usually sleep through thunderstorms but this one woke me up. It was quite scary actually. The next day everywhere was flooded.

Here's the 11th July 1995 forecast. I remember a thunderstorm during the morning. It cleared and it was a hot and sunny but sticky afternoon when it clouded up and we had another thunderstorm about 4pm

I always associated Summer 1995 with a relatively thundery July (essentially a hotter, sunnier and less thundery version of July 1994) but much below average thunder activity in June and August. In Tyneside thunder activity was about normal with storms on the 11th/12th July, a weaker one on the 15th July, and hail and thunder from a north to north-westerly regime on the 27th August, though many other regions did fall somewhat short of the normal, particularly East Anglia.

Those 10th/11th July forecasts have a lot of nostalgic value as I remember watching the synoptics closely, being quite excited by the showery thundery period being forecast up to the time of the British Grand Prix (16th July).

Here is the 26th July 1995 forecast. Remember this one very well, it looked as though thunderstorms were going to move northwards but they died out. We just had thick high cloud here, the reminants of the rain and storms.

Wanted to say thanks Mr D for posting all these forecasts of notably thundery periods of the '90s, I've really enjoyed watching them. In particular I like the forecasts of the thundery spells in June and July of '94. No doubt one of those forecasts relates to vague memories I have stored in my mind of storms I saw when I was 6 years old.

TV weather broadcasts back in the '90s were in another league compared to the ones of today. For one, the forecasters weren't hesitant to use the term 'thunderstorm' lol.

Great years.

Here's that scorching Countryfile forecast again of 30th July 1995

Here's the 2nd August 1995 forecast and a hint of some relief from the hot weather. I remember a couple of small thunderstorm during this period. They developed over the Pennines and pushed westwards on the flow.

I remember it well. Weeks on end of sweltering in my van. It finally broke on the Wednesday before I went on holiday to Blackpool. But then I have form. I'm the one who went away at the precise moment the 1976 spell ended!

Yes, I did that too. Went to the Isle of Wight camping in a tent in September 76, just as the rains came and we had 5" of rain in two days (10th-11th?). Was thoroughly miserable. Worst bit of timing ever ;-)

Here's the 7th August 1995 forecast and how much high pressure was dominating. August 1995 is the sunniest August on record but even during the first half of the month there were some cloudy interludes as can be seen here
