Link below to news story today of 'explosion' last night in north Co. Dublin.

www.rte.ie/news/2007/0702/rush.html Sorry - can't get link to work - you may have to copy and paste

'Explosion' put down to 'freak waether' conditions (not connected - directly anyway - to any thunderstorm activity).

Any ideas or thoughts what that might be about?

A rumble of thunder? The media will happily call anything 'freak'.

Wouldn't appear to be thunder - if you look at the attcahed news report this is sort of ruled out.

No lightning in the area at the time or close by in fact.It appears to be a methane explosion of some description as it was also heard in Swords,co Dublin too about 6-7miles away. There is a tight lid on this for some reason.

I think its very nice, when we humans actually don't know what the answer is for something as simple as a loud bang. At last the unknown, we are not perfect ;)

There was a very loud explosion up here a couple of weeks back, turned out to be kids with an industrial firework on a nearby car park.
