Just back in from walking the dog. Nothing visible yet but Bz has just tipped South again. Will keep an eye out.

Sky not too bad, some low cloud and streaky high level cirrus but stars visible. Crescent moon won't be a problem.

I might be wrong, but those were the remnants of the large spot from earlier this month. If they are then the sun should be fairly clean of spots....

You're not wrong, they are the leftovers of the behemoths and this is their third (and final!) pass across the visible side. Not bad longevity, but the record is 6 months!

  • So after last month being the most active this yr ,oct must be one the least active this yr with i think 13 spotless days, nearly half the month. Would have been a few more if it wasnt for some days with very small spots.

It seems that spaceweather.com has managed to find a way to deprive us from a spotless day by counting one of the faded spots.

If you notice the sunspot number is always 11 when you can't see anything!!!

Spaceweather is one day behind, and the single spot was definitely still visible yesterday. It's gone today though.

1 group * 10 + 1 spot = 11

11 is the minimum non-zero count for an individual observer.

It wasn't visible to me in the image I posted yesterday. The sun looked blank.

Anyway, we will hopefully get an official spotless day tomorrow.

Good news with the sunspots but we need the flux to go down too. The 90 day average is at the same place as it was this time last year, largely because of the unusual September surge which was the most active month since the solar maximum.

We've beaten 2006 in the cycle. 2018-2020 should see proper solar minimum conditions with the potential to hit the top 10 spotless years (07 and 08 were both above about 150).

Great shots. Plenty of pix from across the country coming in on Twitter from lower latitudes such a Brecon Beacons and Anglesey.

I could only see a faint glow low on the Northern horizon here (S. Staffs).
