At least there's an exciting climax to the 1st division with Gretna 1 point ahead of St Johnstone going into the last game on Saturday. Gretna, despite playing the bottom side, have probably got the toughest game and if St Johnstone beat Hamilton then it'll be a remarkable turnaround considering the gap was 14 points at the start of March!!

COME ON THE SAINTS!!!!!

I knew somebody was going to post something like that, it was Man U or Arsenal, a few years back. The last team to have won the top Scottish league, who weren't Celtic or Rangers was Aberdeen........in 1985! In that same period there have 7 different English Champions.

Total league titles won

51 Rangers
41 Celtic
4 Heart of Midlothian
4 Hibernian

<sigh>

Every Scottish football fan is well aware of the shortcomings of the game thanks to the monopoly of the Old Firm but it all comes down to the fact that Scotland is a largely empty country with only 2 major population centres and a few smaller ones, and there is no way that our population can support 40 football teams. And the main reason that Rangers and Celtic have had lots of success whereas Heart and Hibs have had less comes down to demographics. Edinburgh is, IMO, less of a sporting city than Glasgow and has a more eclectic taste in sports so that demographic is spread fairly thin.

I also think that in 20 or so years the English league will be the same with 3 or 4 teams sharing the titles between them and the rest of the pack playing for pride! Until something is done with the TV money the rich teams will get richer and the rest will continue to struggle!

Finally, it is true to say that Rangers and Celtic dominate the Scottish leahue and will continue to do so, but how would it be in Wales if Swansea, Cardiff and Wrexham were still playing in the Welsh leagues? Same story methinks!

...and they've done it! Gretna - the first time in Scottish league history to win all 3 leagues in a row and reach the SPL. Spare a thought for St.Johnstone - they were champions until Gretna scored in the last minute.
edit: it was 3 mins into injury time when Gretna scored...Saints and anti-mild must be pig sick :wallbash:

Gretna in Europe by the end of next season???

Not bad for a team that got stuffed by Worksop Town not so many years ago.

No chance, and I'm not just saying that because I hate them...even though I do!!

Unless their chairman spends a fortune then I predict that they will be relegated by March next season.
They played 2 games against SPL teams in the cup competitions this year, scored 1 and conceded 9!!

Whereas St Johnstone played 6 SPL teams, won 4 games and lost 2 (1 in extra time), scoring 12 times and only letting in 4.

The wrong team went up and the 'fairytale' will end very abruptly!

I'm not bitter, honest!!! :whistling:

They only need to buy a few average prem players and they should finnish mid table.
Apparently the chairman is looking into investing and getting somne better players. Betetr players!!! Celtic Rangers watch out.

Well done to Aberdeen for an excellent season, defeating Rangers in the final game to earn a spot in Europe next season with a total of 65 points. It was a special game with an amazing atmosphere. Jimmy Calderwood has done a fantastic job by splitting the SPL's big money teams and even running Rangers all the way for a Champions League place. Hopefully more of the same next season.

Absolutely! Glad to see some better quality signings this year as well. Jackie McNamara will be a good addition who brings some much needed experience to back up the talented kids we have. Dutch winger Jeffrey De Visscher should prove to be a decent buy. He has been capped at U-21 level for Holland and you dont win caps at any level in Holland if you are a donkey! Would like to see a decent striker signed though. What we really lack is a 15-20 goals a season striker who can put away all the chances the rest of the team create.

So Russell Anderson has gone to Sunderland for £1m. Shame he has gone but I wish Russell well, he has been a great servant for Aberdeen. Hopefully they will invest some of the money in a decent striker which is what we need above everything else at the moment.

It is a pity but Sunderland have got a gem. I reckon JC will be lucky to get 25% of the transfer fee. Russell has donated part of, if not all, of his signing on fee (100K) back to AFC for the purpose of youth development - just what you would expect from the man.

One other point, watch Anderson now get picked for Scotland on a regular basis once his place has been cemented in the Sunderland team - just shows you are only as good as the size of club you represent when it comes to being selected at International level. Disgrace!
