Model Thread 'fun'

team forum
Just thought I'd get my blog rolling with something that I know a lot of people are affected by and interested in - the craziness of the model thread at times (it won't be all about such thrilling topics as moderating!).

The model thread is one of the most visited, read and posted into parts of the forum, often a source of much entertainment, info and enjoyment but sometimes also a source of frustration, off topicness and occasional insanity :help:

We know from the feedback we get that the vast majority of the members want that thread kept on topic and un-cluttered so we do our best to keep it that way, but wow is it hard work at times.. We try not to delete, move or edit posts wherever possible as we want the discussion to flow, but in that particular thread we do seem to have to step in more than we'd like to.

Not only can things go from perfect to a nightmare in the flash because there's obviously a lot of passion and varying opinions around the topics being discussed (and this is one of the reasons we really appreciate your reports when you spot something untoward), but there are also grey areas when it comes to trying to decide what is or isn't on topic or what is or isn't overstepping our guidelines.

The obvious ones are simple to deal with - it's those posts which have a bit of model, a bit of something else and a bit of a bit more - editing posts is an option but sometimes if we get there too late there can then be 10 replies to the off topic part of the post and it's then all starting to look a bit messy. Then there's the issue of what constitutes a 'personal attack' - some people have a different way with words than others, plus it's really difficult to read the tone of a post when all you have is black and white on the page, sometimes an innocuous comment leads to outrage and other times a comment which looked ott turns out to have been ok.

Then of course there's the human element - we have a great team here all of whom are here to try to help out the best that they can, but we're all different, all see posts differently and will all take slightly different decisions when it comes to these grey areas. While that can lead to what some people see as inconsistency at times, it's also a strength - it's much better to have humans trying to understand the thread and judging things on their merits than a black and white robotic response to issues.

But anyway, I've typed too much already - but hopefully I've given a bit of an insight into how we're trying to keep everything running smoothly, how much effort we put into that, and how tricky it can be at times. We're not perfect, but no human is so please don't hold that against us! Please keep the reports coming, try to keep your posts in the model thread on topic and respectful to the other members, and if you have any questions at all please drop any one of us a pm..

Cheers

Paul

I've always tended to think we need 2 threads for the model output as discussed in other threads. Official Threads started by mods........One for Forcasts/summaries (based on the reliable) and one for Longer range or General discussion of all output.

A General/long range thread is bound to be the busier of the two due to more people looking for trends futher a field rather than what we "know" is highly likely in the reliable time frames.

Try two official threads and keep them up for a long while till all the NW members get used it, becuase having one thread for Model Output is always going to be mess if you have some people commenting on the reliable and a magority commenting on random longer range charts which they are totally entitled to do regardless of preferences and time frame.
Is that not what the technical thread is for though? Plus we already have a long range winter outlook thread.

To be fair, you could have a thread for every minute point, but it would make little difference and people would still stray off topic.

I love the insanity of the MOD, if someone annoys me I just block them......simples :)
Yep, we have tried a variety of split thread options including dividing it into longer and shorter term and the problem with it is that a. the discussions do tend to need to be together - eg what happens short term has an effect longer term + as RD says people will post in the wrong topic etc so it actually makes the job harder at times.

We're hoping to make an edited summary thread soon which the team will manually copy the most informative posts into for those who want a quick read without the discussion around it.
Good deal of common sense written there. Model Thread is good fun - the differences in opinions do liven things up - without them things could be quite dry. It's a pity the technical discussion thread is so under used as this is where some of the more advanced discussions could sit.

Most folk on here I think know where the line is and can spot a Troll post a mile away.If they don't like it report it or block the poster. Then thay can have the model thread they want to see. This is possibly the most polite forum I have written on and the respectful tone underlines most of what can be read here.

Hi Paul,

I particularly like the sound of that last bit, this being another area that may help the mood. For 99% of members though the weather needs to turn to something more interesting, if get my drift. Any news on any further video features and whether they could be linked to the MOD thread when things get slightly antagonistic in there.

Cheers

Perhaps the answer to the snipers, gripers and muppets in diapers would be to set up a 'Feel free to have a go' thread, where members can have a crack at those who get on their nerves, with the understanding that what's said in the 'Feel free to have a go' thread stays in the 'Feel free to have a go' thread.

Would be a great way for people to vent their spleen, plus it would make a great source of entertainment for those lurking....

Now that would be a radicle step!

Yeah! A place for the homeless idiot comments where anything goes... Just put a health warning at the top eh?
Could even bring back the "Dislike" button so enough negative votes sees the comment automatically hidden unless and member can then choose read the post or bypass it. Was quite fun the last time they brought it back and saved everyone the hassle of reporting or deleting posts :p
Lol, the idea of an anything goes thread scares the life out of me if I'm totally honest!

I see where you're coming from with it, but I just can't see it ending happily when someone reads a post about themselves in there - it's one thing saying it should 'stay in the thread' but the reality would probably be very different and we could end up with more hassle than we started with at times.

The dislike button was something I did quite like, but the majority didn't share that view to be fair, and I can see why as it did create a few issues of it's own with people taking offence to negative votes and posting about it etc.
